Best Place to Work

This award recognises the retailer that sets industry-leading standards as an employer. Entries may be specific initiatives launched in the last 12 months or phases of longer-term programmes that have had a measurable beneficial impact on staff. Retailers have to fight hard to recruit and retain people and this award aims to highlight those businesses that have put people at the heart of their overall strategy. This award is open to all retailers, regardless of turnover or size.

The American Express Best Fashion Retailer

This award celebrates an outstanding fashion retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers which count clothing and fashion as their main operation. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

Trax Best Grocer

This award celebrates an outstanding grocery retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers which count grocery as their main operation. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

Store of the Year

This category is open to all retailers of all sizes. All new stores and refurbishments over the 12 months are eligible to enter. The judges will be looking for innovation and creativity in the design of the store, which should be in the UK. They will also consider stores that demonstrably show a sales uplift following the implementation of the redesign and an indication that it will help deliver profitable growth to the retailer in the longer term.

Best Value Retailer

This award celebrates an outstanding value retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers which operate with a value proposition. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

The Cognizant Responsible Retailer

This award recognises a retailer for an outstanding contribution to the communities in which it operates or an initiative or campaign which is making a positive impact in the wider world. The winner will have set the agenda on this issue, inspiring/challenging others to follow their lead, and be able to demonstrate practical and/or measurable changes that have resulted. The winner will represent retail ‘good citizenship’ and show that corporate social responsibility also delivers business benefits. Entries may include initiatives launched over the last 12 months, or a phase over that period of a longer-term programme.

The Hermes Customer Experience – Game Changer

This award recognises the retailer that is leading the way in delivering outstanding customer experience. It may be enabled by technology, or another type of solution such as a service, but it should meet a particular customer need or delight and excite the customer. The winning initiative will have demonstrably played a pivotal part in improving business performance, delivering success and enhancing customer experience.

Emerging Retailer

This award celebrates a young, growing retailer that has made waves in its market over the last 12 months. It is open to all types of retailer up to eight years old with turnover of up to £75m who are either a new business or new to the UK market. The winner will have demonstrated a clear proposition, financial progress such as sales growth and evidence of ongoing opportunity and business sustainability into the future.

Own Brand Range or Product

Own brands are increasingly at the heart of retailers’ strategies, providing a point of difference and a hot bed of innovation. This award is designed to recognise the role and importance of private label and own brand ranges and products, house brands and exclusive tie ups in delivering growth for their retailers. The judges will be looking for evidence of ranges and products that have had an outstanding 12 months, delivering growth for their retailers and products in tune with their customers’ needs.

The Salesforce Speciality Retailer

This award is aimed at giving recognition to the specialist retailers that focus predominantly on one major product category or one specialist sector, which contribute to a USP for that retailer. The winning retailer will be able to demonstrate how this specialist position in the market and its specialist knowledge around its offering have given it a unique market position and delivered outstanding business performance. Speciality retailers of all turnovers and operating through any combination of channels are eligible to enter.

Health and Beauty Retailer

This award celebrates an outstanding health and/or beauty retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers which count health and/or beauty as their main operation. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

Store Manager

This award recognises the UK’s top store manager and is open to all store managers no matter what size their store or business. Managers should be put forward by their company, but the individual must have given their consent to be nominated. The judges will be looking for excellent retail skills, inspirational leadership, proven general management skills and ability to deliver the brand’s customer values.

The Salesforce Best Retailer over £250m

This award celebrates an outstanding retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers with annual sales of more than £250m. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

This award celebrates an outstanding retailer that has demonstrated great commercial success and catered consummately for its customers over the last 12 months. It is open to all retailers with annual sales of less than £250m. The winner will demonstrate outstanding retail skills, deep customer understanding, excellent execution of strategy and business sustainability.

The Clarity Retailer Leader

  • To what extent has this personality led their business to a successful year - in terms of sales, profits and reputation?
  • Has this personality led the agenda, both in terms of his or her business but also in terms of British retail in general?
  • To what extent has this personality’s reputation and that of their business been enhanced over the last 12 months?
  • To what extent has this individual demonstrated an understanding of how to position their business for the complex challenges facing British retail in the last 12 months and to exploit the opportunities
  • going forward?

The AlixPartners Outstanding Contribution

Once a year the judges of the Retail Week Awards recognise an individual who over a long period has made an outstanding contribution to the industry. Previous winners have included Mark Price, Sir Terry Leahy, Lord Rose, Lord Harris and Ray Kelvin.

Persado Consumer Choice (public vote via poll)

This award celebrates the favourite UK retailer. The winner is determined by retail consumers who have participated in an online survey about their favourite UK retailer.

The Blue Yonder Retail Activist Award

This award is to recognise an individual who has personally championed a cause or led a campaign which demonstrates retail’s good corporate citizenship and contribution to society, such as taking a lead on a social or environmental issue. The winner will likely have won publicity for the cause, led a campaign and/or driven change in their business and set an example that inspires/challenges others to follow their lead.
