Matt Hood is Managing Director of Co-op Food, the UK’s leading convenience retailer. Matt leads a team that is developing the four routes to market in the Food business with a focus on pure convenience. This includes 2,500 retail stores, a store franchise operation, a wholesale proposition with Nisa and a fast-growing rapid-delivery and online proposition.
Matt was previously Co-op’s Chief Commercial Officer where he was responsible for developing and leading the plans that underpin the commercial strategy of Co-op and Nisa Food businesses, including all aspects of the overall commercial offer such as buying, technical, agriculture, ecommerce and the commercial transformation programme. He has been with the Co-op for over nine years and has played a leading role in developing, implementing and executing the strategy that has helped transform the performance of the business.
Matt originally joined Co-op in 2013 as part of a new leadership team tasked with rescuing and rebuilding the business. In the past few years, Matt has led his team through the unexpected impacts of Covid, Brexit and availability challenges, as well as running a commercially successful business in an unprecedented retail market. He and his team continue to adapt to trading in an increasingly multichannel business, with wholesale, franchise and ecommerce becoming key parts of how Co-op deals with its suppliers as well as interacting with customers and members. He continues to bring to life Co-op values and champions a better way of doing business that makes things fairer for colleagues, communities and the planet.
Outside of work, Matt is a big sponsor and advocate of inclusion and mental health strategies. He enjoys spending time with his young family, travelling, playing and following football, and keeping fit.
